I co-created my first short experimental film in 2019 as part of this From Other to Center project. The film was a personal intention-setting and dedication to exploring the role of ancestral identity in embodying my full self. I was so drawn to the medium of film — now, film/short-form video is my favorite way to see an idea come to life.

From Other to Center
We struggle to find our footing in a world burdened with colonization, unhealthy individualism, and isolation. What if we found a sense of grounding in our ancestors? We embark on a visual journey to honor our roots and find a home where we are centered.
Our hope is that by looking toward our ancestors and their splendid stories — it will encourage us to face the present moment with clarity and gain a glimpse of the future.
Adornment (by Aysha Jamali)
Inspired by questions on where and who she comes from, Aysha explores her ancestral identity through artifacts of adornment significant to her South Asian heritage. She cherishes how certain moments—mehndi on the skin, a tikka on her forehead— resonate in her soul as gifts from the Creator.
Having had lifelong experiences of being othered, Aysha seeks a healing journey to embrace a deeper version of herself.
