We explore—through visual, artistic expression—the role of our ancestral identity in embodying our full selves.
Founded in 2019, From Other to Center was dreamed up by four women—Aysha Jamali, Asha Noor, Anisa Jibrell, and Isra Daraiseh—who saw a need in building a sense of belonging and connection by drawing from their ancestral history.
As Black, African, South Asian, and Arab Muslim women from four different walks of life, we found symmetry in our individual stories. As writers, activists, healers, daughters, sisters, and descendants of richness, our identities and experiences are as expansive and diverse as the communities we work alongside, the issues that we address, and the systems we fight to dismantle.
As we explore our respective roots in a way that feels authentic to us, we hope capturing this intimate process lights a fire in others to embark on their own journeys in knowing themselves.
